Pretty angel sculpture in foreground; stained glass window in background. Photo taken at the 1767 baroque church of Saint Margaret at the beguinage in Lier, Belgium, just 30 minutes from Antwerp.
In medieval days, a benguinage was a home for unmarried women who wanted to live communally like nuns, but without taking lifelong vows. Most beguinages consisted of a cluster of several small houses that formed a separate village within a city. The beguinage of Lier was built in the 1700s with the support of the duchess Aleidis, wife of Henry III. There are 162 mostly brick houses spread over 11 streets.

Photography by Eddy Van Leuven of Flanders, Belgium. Van Leuven has been taking photos since childhood, a hobby shared with his father, who gave him his first camera.
I am proud to display a bit of his work. I especially like his nature and architectural photos. And his people. Basically I think he's a genius.
See more of Van Leuven's work.
