The Antwerp Cathedral of our Lady in Belgium instantly humbles contemporary architects and contractors. Built over two centuries, between 1352 and 1521, this masterpiece of lacey stone work is considered one of the finest gothic buildings in Europe.
The 405-ft. tall tower, the tallest structure in Antwerp, was designed by Herman de Waghemakere and built over a ten year period by Domien de Waghemakere, Antoon Keldermans II and Rombout Keldermans, completed in 1518. It houses a carillon of 49 bells, the largest of which, Karolus was added in 1507 and weighs 7 tons.
In the cathedral are three large paintings by Rubens, the bronze tomb of Isabella of Bourbon, 55 large stained glass windows and a Schyven organ with 5,770 pipes.
Over 500,000 worshippers and guests visit the cathedral annually and the yearly maintenance budget is $2.3 million.
