For countless ostrich farms around the world, home is definitely where the ostrich is.
The ostrich is the largest bird, lays the largest eggs, runs 40 mph and has big pretty brown eyes with long eyelashes.
The ostrich eats seeds, plants and bugs, hangs out in groups of from 5 to 50 and males like harems of 6 or so females. They weigh around 225 pounds but large males may weigh as much as 350 pounds and stand up to 9 feet high. Ostriches live 30-70 years. Females lay the eggs in communal nests and males sit on them. Both males and females share in turning the eggs on a regular basis. In the wild, the mortality rate is as high as 90% so it's a bit of a wonder that the species survives.
Don't corner one: you could be maimed or killed. An ostrich kicks with a force of 1,500 pounds per square inch.
Ostrich meat is said to taste much like beef. Ground, it sells for around $6/lb.
A single pretty brown ostrich eye is larger than the ostrich brain.
