This magnet pictures a 16th century Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger portrait of Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596). Drake was an Elizabethan vice admiral, privateer, navigator, slave trader and politician. The Spaniards viewed him as the dragon, a pirate; his English countrymen heralded him as a hero. King Philip II of Spain offered a monstrous reward for his life; Queen Elizabeth of England knighted him.
Drake first went to see at age 13. By the time he was 20 he was master of his own ship. He made his first trip to the New World at at 23. He was knighted by age 41.
