This magnet pictures a 16th century Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger portrait of Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596). Drake was an Elizabethan vice admiral, privateer, navigator, slave trader and politician. The Spaniards viewed him as the dragon, a pirate; his English countrymen heralded him as a hero. King Philip II of Spain offered a monstrous reward for his life; Queen Elizabeth of England knighted him. Drake first went to see at age 13. By the time he was 20 he was master of his own ship.
