This magnet pictures Anne of Cleves (1515-1557), married in 1540 as the 4th wife of English King Henry VIII.
Henry initiated the search for a new wife a month after the death of Jane Seymour. Reports of his poor treatment of wives I-III had reached Europe, however, and several would-be candidates were not interested in risking their heads for the middle aged, obese and philandering King of England.
Nearly two years elapsed before Henry selected his 16th century version of a mail order bride, Anne of Cleves. The marriage agreement was based on diplomatic expediency and a portrait by court artist, Hans Holbein.
By the time Anne appeared in England, quiet and unassuming, with little interest in the arts or court frivolity, a new romantic target had caught Henry's eye, Kathryn Howard, and the King rejected Anne even before the wedding ceremony.
Anne weighed her choices and wisely accepted an annulment and assets. Her married to Henry lasted barely 6 months.
