Catharine is a Christian saint and martyr from the 4th century. According to legend, Catherine was married to Christ by the Virgin Mary. When she failed to persuade Roman Emperor Maxentius to stop persecuting Christians, and rejected his romantic advances, she was imprisoned, tortured on the breaking wheel and ultimately beheaded. During her imprisonment she converted many pagans to Christianity. Angels carried her body to Mt. Sinai, later the site of the St. Catherine Monastery and a famous collection of early Christian artworks.
Her feast day is celebrated on November 24-25. She became the patron saint of wheelwrights and mechanics, scientists, theologians and philosophers. In some stories she became Joan of Arc's adviser.
