Metropolis premiered in Berlin in January, 1927. As one of the most costly films of the day, it was heavily promoted in Germany, and widely discussed in the worldwide press. H. G. Wells wrote a scathing review of the basic story line, while others were spellbound by the cinematography and sets. By most accounts today it is considered the first science fiction film done on an epic scale.
You can find DVDs of the Channing Pollock version of the film on Ebay and Amazon. It was reissued in 1984 and 2002.
I'm not a silent film fan and watched it the first time just to see what all the talk as about. Several viewings later I was still amazed that it was produced so long ago. If you love Art Deco architecture and science fiction, you're sure to enjoy the film.
