Richard D'Oyly Carte (1944-1901) was an
English impresario in the late 1800s who brought Gilbert and
Sullivan together. He formed the D'Oyly opera company in
1875.
The Mikado (The Town of Titipu), a 2-act
comic opera, opened at the Savoy on 14th March 1885 and ran for
just over 2 years. Like others of Gilbert's creations, it
satirized British politics. In its day it was the most frequently
produced of the Savoy operas and still ranks as one of the most popular
pieces in musical theater.
The 1999 movie, Topsy Turvey, is based around the
sometimes tumultuous relationship between Gilbert and Sullivan, during
the production of Mikado. It's a great film and I highly recommend
it.
