Some people call him a Whistle Pig, others a Ground Hog, and how much wood can a woodchuck chuck?
Groundhogs are part of the ground squirrel family known as marmots. They're common in the northeast and Midwest, and other areas where it becomes cool enough in the winter for their 3-6 month hibernation.
In its 2-6 year lifespan a groundhog can grow to as long as 26"and weigh up to 9 lbs eating plants and insects, mostly. A female produces just one litter a year, of from 2-6 babies.
Their burrows are large, with tunnels up to 45 feet long and 5 feet deep. They prefer the safety of their burrows, near open fields, but can swim and climb trees in search of food and to escape predators. They can run at a rate of about 10 mph.
A young groundhog found its way inside our fenced yard recently. I didn't want it to have an encounter with our dog so used a broom to herd it out. Hope it found its way back to the burrow and Mom. For the record, even baby groundhogs do not like brooms one little bit.
The whistle pig name comes from a shrill whistling sound they make to warn their family members of danger. They also make a kind of chattering/growling sound when ticked off.
