| Some people call him a Whistle Pig, others a Ground Hog, and how much wood can a woodchuck chuck?
Groundhogs are part of the ground squirrel family known as marmots. They're common in the northeast and midwest, and other areas where it becomes cool enough in the winter for their 3-6 month hibernation.
In their 2-6 year lifespan groundhogs can grow to as long as 26"and weight up to 9 lbs. They eat plants and insects, mostly, and burrow in the ground. A female produces just one litter a year, of from 2-6 babies. Their burrows are large, with tunnels up to 45 feet long and 5 feet deep. They prefer the safety of their burrows, near open fields, but can swim and climb trees in search of food and to escape predators. They can run at a rate of about 10 mph.
The whistle pig name comes from a shrill whistling sound they make to warn their family members of danger.
