Thomas Adams was a photographer who obtained his first patent on a machine with which to make chewing gum in 1871. The story goes that Adams first planned to make a rubber substitute for boots and raincoats but couldn't get the right formula so instead made gum. His first brands were Chiclets and Black Jack, with Black Jack the first stick gum. Pepsin came out in the 1890s, Clove in the 1930s.
In 1899, the American Chicle Company was formed by Yucatan Gum, Adams Gum, Beeman's Gum, Kis-Me Gum, and S. T. Britten. American Chicle was purchased by Warner-Lambert and is now part of Pfizer. Thomas Adams Jr. was the president of the new organization.
