Carrying a bag full of toys, a Christmas tree and a handful of twigs, St. Nicholas looks in window at a family of four, a mother and her three children. Santa appears to ponder whether the children deserve twigs or gifts. In some legends, Santa carried a Book of Sins with which to make the determination. In this illustration he seems to be trying to rely on his memory, or telepathy. |
