DESCRIPTION
This fridge magnet features an 1860 broadside advertising the maiden voyage of the Great Eastern steamship, captained by Commander John Vine Hall. From its aborted launch in 1858 until 1899, 10 years after it was scrapped, it was the world's largest steamship.
The Great Eastern was originally known as the Leviathan. The ship's history is a long list of problems and failures. It's most productive years were in laying telegraph cable from 1865-74. The Atlantic Cable was laid by the crew of the Great Eastern, in 1866.
The market for passenger fares was not large enough for ships with the Great Eastern's capacity (4,000) and it's brief use for that purpose was in 1867 when France chartered it to transport Americans to the Paris Exposition. Among those passengers was Jules Verne who in 1874 wrote a book about the voyage, Une Ville Flottante.

ADDITIONAL MAGNET FAQ |
Q. Can you personalize or make custom magnets?
A. Happy to. Simple text changes to stock magnets are free. Just add instructions to your payment or email me after payment. Sorry, I do not sell magnets of copyrighted images unless you are the copyright holder. |
Q. What about
durability?
A. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth. Do not soak, use abrasives or apply cleaning products containing bleach or solvents. I've run them through the dishwasher without disaster, but they'll last longer if you keep them out of puddles and away from puppy teeth. And they're most definitely not suited for exterior display.
Q. What is your magnet
return policy?
A. Return it within 14 days of receipt for a full refund, including return shipping, up to the amount I spent getting it to you.
(In other words, if you decide to fly it here on your jet, I'm not buying the fuel :) |
Copyrights and images
I do not knowingly sell copyrighted materials. Please contact me if you see an image in my offerings that is contrary to this policy. |
Q. Are magnets three dimensional or die cut shapes?
Please be advised that my magnets are NOT three dimensional or die cut. They do not light up, make noise or tell time. They are rectangular pictures printed on flat, flexible 30ml magnetic vinyl with a protective satin-finish top coating and hand finished edges. The magnets are roughly twice the thickness & strength of magnetic material found at office supply stores.
In other languages that's: El imán es una imagen plana. L'aimant est une image plate. Der Magnet ist ein flaches Bild. Il magnete è un'immagine piatta. De magneet is een vlakke afbeelding.
Q. When do you ship?
A. Since my magnets are made to order, I allow myself 4 business days for production. However, I strive to ship within 36-48 hours of payment and will always work with you if you have a special deadline. Just let me know if you are buying for a particular date and I'll move your order to the top of the heap. |
Q. Will the magnet
stick to my....?
A. I'd like to have you as a customer, but only if you know what you are buying. The truth is that magnets do not stick to all metals. For example, magnets do not stick to stainless steel or brass.
