Model Z-70 Zoalite floor lamp manufactured by the Burdick Cabinet Corp of Milton, Wisconsin. We've converted the lamp for use with a standard light bulb but it was originally designed to be used by consumers and physicians for infrared treatment (once believed to impart energy and relieve muscle pain). A gooseneck arm and telescoping pole (43" to 62") allows great flexibility in directing light for hands-free operation and the lamp head, equipped with a wood handle, can also be detached from the lamp pole to bring it closer to a targeted area.
The Burdick story is an interesting one. Founded in 1913 by Fred Frazier "Fritz" Burdick (1869-1950) the company manufactured a variety of light-based therapy lamps and equipment, including a dry heat cabinet. A patient sat inside the cabinet with his head sticking out the top. (A humorous image, yes, but in 100 years what will our descendents make of tanning beds?) Unlike most of yesteryears long gone manufacturers of dubious health inventions, however, Burdick went on to become one of the world's most important producers of electrocardiograph equipment, including heart defibrillators, treadmills and stress monitors. After a half dozen acquisitions in the 1980s and 90s it is today part of Cardiac Science Inc. based in Deerfield, Wisconsin.
Please note that metal lamp shades become quite hot thus are not suited to be used by little children who might burn their fingers or use it for a hoodie coat rack.
