Old stage light manufactured by Berkey Colortran, model Vari-Beam 1000. Has been mounted to a heavy iron base to make it easy to sit on a shelf, table or floor where it will produce dramatic and functional lighting. The socket has been replaced to accommodate a standard base bulb and the lamp has been rewired with an in-line switch.
Berkey Colortran of Burbank, California was founded in 1969 when Berkey Photo acquired ColorTran industries. Today the Colortran brand is sold by Levitan. Colortran won an Academy awards in 1964 & 1965 for technical achievement in lighting. Some other interesting trivia: Berkey Photo also acquired the Keystone Camera Company in 1966 and in 1979 successfully sued Kodac in a precedent-setting lawsuit.
