| | | | |  | | DESCRIPTION | | This magnet pictures an illustration by Warwick Goble from the early 1900s. It appeared in The Fairy Book by Dinah Maria Craik accompanying a French tale by Charles Perrault from the 1600s, Cinderella.
The illustration pictures Cinderella in the kitchen by the fireplace. She wears one glass slipper so presumably the prince is nearby? The house was full of people at that moment, what with the two stepsisters, mother, prince and his retinue, but the artist chose to show Cinderella alone -- except for the rat who became a coachman, one of the lizards who became a footman and the pumpkin that became her coach, all three of which should have been long gone. Story has some holes, too. Says her Godmother scooped out the inside of the pumpkin before making it into a coach. Seems like if she had enough magical power to turn a rat into a coachman, she could have gutted that pumpkin with a wave of her wand. Dinah Craik (1826-1887) was an English poet and novelist, also known by her maiden name as Miss Mulock.
English artist Warwick Goble (1862–1943) illustrated dozens of children's books and magazines, including fairy tale anthologies and such classics as Treasure Island and Kidnapped. |  Gross. There's a version of the story in which one stepsister cuts off her heal so as to get her foot into the glass slipper, and the other stepsister cuts off a toe.
