Large and heavy block pulley manufactured by the H. Channon company of Chicago. Founded in 1871 by Henry Channon, the H. Channon Company originally operated a fleet of ships on the Great Lakes. By the turn of the century the firm had turned to manufacturing and distributing machinery and tools for industry, agriculture and publishing.
Henry immigrated to America from England in 1858 and settled in Chicago. In time his two sons, Harry and James, joined him in the firm. Grandson Sir Henry "Chips" Channon became a British citizen, a devout Tory, married a Guinness brewery heiress, was knighted, served in the House of Commons and hobnobbed with British society. The contributions made by his grandfather, father and uncle were far more valuable but a rollicking lifestyle described in decades of diaries have secured a place in history for Chips that is likely to outlast that of his industrious ancestors.
