This magnet features a 1871 painting by Dutch artist, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912, b. Laurens Tadema) of the Netherlands. The painting pictures two women painting pottery. The subject choice was likely influenced by the popularity of China painting (also known as china decorating, porcelain painting and pottery painting) amongst society women at the time. The craze would gain momentum and last for nearly 50 years. The period depicted in the painting, however, is that of Ancient Greece. Tadema's rigorous attention to detail and accuracy was legendary, so it is almost certain the vases, garments (a chiton?) and table were rendered based on meticulous research. His lifelong interest in architecture permeated his artworks so the Parthenon-like structure seen through the window.
Magnet size: 3-3/4" x 5-1/4" (9.52cm x 13.33cm)
