This magnet depicts a portrait of writer Henry James (1843-1916) in 1862 by John LaFarge. Born in America, James spent most of his life in England. Identified with Realist Fiction, James authored 20 novels, 112 stories, 12 plays and a variety of nonfiction essays. His best known novels are The Portrait of a Lady and The Turn of the Screw. Henry, his brother William James, and the artist who painted this portrait, John LaFarge, became fast friends in 1859 while the trio worked and studied in Newport, RI. In addition to water colors, murals and book illustration, by the 1870s LaFarge had become a noted stained glass designer who pioneered in opalescent and cloisonné glass techniques. A few of his better known windows are in the Unity Church in Easton, Massachusetts, the Battle, Homer and Virgil windows at Harvard from 1881, and the Peacock window at the Worcester Art Museum.
