Vintage 11-drawer file cabinet with drawers for 3x5 index cards, legal files, a large bottom drawer for legal files, 3 drawers for some type of tall and narrow vertical file, such as account ledgers, and a small locked compartment (for which we do not have a key). Manufactured by Shaw-Walker of Muskegon, Michigan. Shaw-Walker was founded in 1899 by Lois Carlisle Walker (1875 - 1953) and A. W. Shaw. The pair are credited with pioneering the 3x5 card filing system on which American business, libraries, hospitals and schools depended for a century. The company's business newsletter was so popular that it eventually became part of Business Week magazine.
The Shaw-Walker name seems to have been mushed into the S&W division of Smead following a series of 1980s-90s mergers and acquisitions.
