Henri Farman Bi-Plane Refrigerator Magnet

Henri Farman Bi-Plane Refrigerator Magnet

This magnet pictures aviation pioneer Henri Farman in Etampes, France, September 21, 1913, at the controls of one of his biplanes. The day prior the Aerial Derby took place in Hendon, England, won by Gustav Hamel with a Morane Monoplane, and a week later the Gordon Bennett race took place in Reims, France. This photo comes from the Smithsonian. The woman standing behind Farman is unknown. An illegible caption identifies her as Madame Dacty or Madame Dady.

Henri Farman (1874-1958) flew, designed and manufactured airplanes with his brother Maurice Farman. Though trained as an artist, Farman's family was wealthy enough that Henri could pursue his love of mechanical inventions. In the 1890s he became a championship cyclist, then became a driver for Renault in auto racing. He was an early customer of Volisin's airplanes and was soon setting records. In 1908 he was the first to make the cross country flight within Europe.

The Farman Aircraft Company built over 200 types of aircraft between 1908 and 1941, and one of their planes played an important role in artillery observation and reconnaissance during WWI.
