This magnet pictures a Mathew Brady portrait of Hiram Ulysses Grant (1822-1885).
Grant was a native of Ohio who entered West Point at age 17, graduating in 1843. He distinguished himself as a lieutenant in the Mexican-American war and by 1854 was promoted to Commander. Soon after the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, Grant recruited a company of volunteers and by 1961 was appointed colonel of the 21st Illinois infantry. Grant delivered the first Union victories in 1862. The following year brought the Vicksburg surrender and Union control of the Mississippi, tipping the scale in the North's favor. Many military authorities recognize Grant as one of history's greatest strategists. He served two terms as U.S. President (1868-1877) and is one of America's more colorful and controversial presidents.
