This magnet pictures Louis Wendell Wilkie (1892-1944), Democrat turned Republican and 1940 US presidential candidate, bested by incumbent 3rd termer Franklin D. Roosevelt. Wilkie became the right man for the Republican party as much for what he was not as for what he was. He was not an Isolationist, a factor of growing importance on the eve of the 1940 convention, soon after the Nazi invasion of France. He was not a politician and the public was willing to take a chance on an amateur. Once he had the nomination, as usual, both parties behaved as jackals, with an abundance of back door politics, lies, scandals and generalized nastiness. Roosevelt won by a comfortable margin in the popular vote (27 to 22 million) and an enormous one in the Electoral College (449 vs 82).
