Three paintings by American artist, John White Alexander (1856-1915), are featured on this refrigerator magnet: The Green Dress, Althea and Young Woman Arranging Her Hair.
At age 18 Alexander moved to New York City and joined the illustration staff at Harpers Weekly magazine as an apprentice, working alongside experienced artists for three yeas. He then studied in Europe for four years. Upon his return to New York in 1881 he became a sought after portraitist, painting Oliver Wendell Holmes, poet Walt Whitman, Robert Louis Stevenson and other prominent figures. For the next two decades he was showered with awards and recognition. Today his work is displayed in museums throughout America and Europe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Library of Congress.
His son was an important topologist mathematician, James Waddell Alexander II.
