This magnet pictures a portrait of Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), author of Democracy in America (1835), French politician and social commentator. Democracy in America was written in 1835 following a tour of the U.S. and Canada. It is considered an early example of sociology. Tocqueville was active in French politics. In 1848 he was a member of the committee assigned to write a new constitution for the short lived Second Republic and the following year became, for a few months, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was opposed to freedom of the press and favored laws restricting political freedoms. He joined with other deputies in resisting Louis Napoleon's 1851 coup and supported restoring the Bourbons rather than accepting Bonaparte's Second Empire. Following a short period of incarceration, he retired from politics and began work on L'Ancien Regime et la Revolution. Only the first volume was published, in 1856.
