This magnet offers a montage of three portraits of Sir Francis Drake (c1540-1595). Drake was an English sailing captain, soldier and politician who engaged in piracy, exploration, naval battles and slave trading during the Elizabethan era of the 16th century. He was beloved by the English, hated by the Spanish. English queen Elizabeth I rewarded him; Spanish King Philip II offered a reward for his life.
Drake made his first voyage to the new world at age 23 and was the first Englishman to sail around the world. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I aboard his ship the Golden Hind in 1581 and became a member of Parliament in 1581 and 1584. Stories of Drake's escapades are colorful and controversial. For some he seems to elicit nearly as much rancor today as he did 400+ years ago.
