This magnet features Mary Boleyn (c1499-1543), older sister to the notorious Anne. The lack of verified information about Mary makes a fertile environment for dramatic fiction, resulting in numerous novels, movies and TV series. Recorded information from her lifetime supports little in popular modern portrayals. About all that can be said with certainty is that she was sister to Anne Boleyn, English King Henry VIII's second wife, that she studied in France and was referred to by the French King Francis I as a, "great whore," was lady in waiting to Henry's 1st wife, Catherine of Aragon, was married in 1520 to Sir William Carey until his death in 1528, engaged in a dalliance of several years with Henry VIII, traveled with her sister Anne and Henry to Calais (1532) and wed commoner William Stafford (1534, begetting 1 or 2 children), who outlived her by 13 years. The notions that the marriage to Stafford was born of a great romance and that she and her sister competed for Henry's affection is pure speculation.
